Homemade Bread Recipe Questions
Is homemade bread better than store bought bread?
With homemade bread, you know exactly what is going into your bread. You can screen out strange chemicals and preservatives. Moreover, homemade bread generally tastes better than store bought bread because it comes out fresh and warm from your oven or bread machine and has not been sitting on a supermarket shelf for days. Homemade bread also saves you time & money because you no longer need to run to the store in order to buy bread.

Is it easy to make bread?
Yes, it is very easy to make bread. The hardest part is probably the kneading of the dough. However, most people use a bread machine or an electric mixer with dough hook to mix & knead their bread dough. Then they bake the dough in an oven. Probably the easiest way to make bread is to use a bread machine in order to mix, knead and bake a bread. All you have to do is place the ingredients in the bread machine’s bread pan, enter the correct bread machine settings and press the start button… and then the bread machine does all of the rest of the work! If you are looking for bread machine ideas, here is Bread Dad’s section on Bread Machine Recipes.
What is leavened bread?
Leavened bread is bread made with a leavening agent (which creates gas bubbles and causes bread dough to rise). Leavening helps breads to become softer and airier. The main leavening agents used to make leavened bread are yeast or baking powder/baking soda.
What is unleavened bread?
Unleavened bread does not use a leavening agent such as yeast or baking powder/baking soda. Since unleavened bread does not rise (due to the lack of a leavening agent), this type of bread tends to be flat and not airy. Examples of unleavened bread include the matzah, tortilla and roti.

What is sourdough bread?
Sourdough bread is a bread made with wild yeast and lactobacillaceae (a bacteria that produces lactic acid). This lactic acid helps to create the classic sour taste associated with sourdough breads. Today, most sourdough breads are made with commercially produced sourdough starters. These starters can be purchased from companies such as Amazon, King Arthur Baking, Breadtopia, etc.
What can I put into homemade bread?
You can add tons of different ingredients to homemade bread. You can add various spices & herbs to make different flavored breads (i.e. rosemary bread). You can also add a wide variety of dried fruits to homemade bread (i.e. raisin bread). Other things that bread makers often try adding to homemade bread include chocolate chips, chopped nuts, etc. Bread makers also like to experiment with different types of flour (i.e. rye flour versus wheat flour), sugars (i.e. molasses versus white granulated sugar), etc.
Can you make bread without yeast?
Yes, you can make bread without yeast. You can make some types of bread that use baking powder or baking soda as the leavening agent. Or you can make unleavened bread (such as a tortilla) that does not use leavening agents such as yeast or baking powder/baking soda. Look online and you will find tons of great “no yeast” bread recipes.
